Installing solar panels: the process in Luxembourg

Good news: for a residential installation, your installer handles most of the technical steps. From quote to commissioning usually takes a few weeks to a few months, depending on administrative and connection timelines.

Here is the typical journey, based on official Luxembourg sources. Details (municipal authorization, grid operator depending on your location) should be confirmed case by case.

How long, what steps?

The installation itself often takes just one to two days. It is the administrative steps (any authorization, grant application, connection request) that set the schedule.

For a system ≤ 30 kW — almost every home — connection is made on a simple request to the grid operator.

From quote to commissioning

  1. 01

    Study & quote

An installer established in Luxembourg (holding the electrician's business permit) checks the roof's suitability, sizes the system and prepares the quote.

  2. 02

    Klimabonus grant & pre-financing

The Klimabonus 2026 grant (up to €10,000) is handled via Klima-Agence / guichet.public.lu. With pre-financing, a registered installer deducts the grant directly from your invoice. The order must be placed by 31/12/2029 for pre-financing, and the grant application filed by 31/12/2031.

  3. 03

    Municipal authorization (to check)

Check with your municipal administration whether a building permit is required — it depends on the municipality and the building. On an existing roof it is often simplified, but confirm it.

  4. 04

    Connection request

For ≤ 30 kW, a simple request to the grid operator (Creos in most municipalities) suffices, via the myCreos platform — preferably made by your electrician. The operator has one month to respond; beyond that, silence counts as approval.

  5. 05

    Installation

Mounting the panels and inverter by the installer usually takes 1-2 days, followed by preparatory works and a grid-side check.

  6. 06

    Meter & commissioning

The grid operator carries out the connection works (within ~30 days) and fits the appropriate smart meter. After a check, the system is commissioned.

Who does what?

The installer / electrician
Study, sizing, connection request (myCreos), mounting, technical works, and often the grant file via pre-financing.
You (the owner)
Check the municipal authorization, choose the quote, sign the connection request if needed.
The grid operator (Creos…)
Approves the request, carries out the connection and installs the meter.

The grid operator depends on your municipality: Creos covers most of the country, but some municipalities have their own operator. Check yours before the connection request.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need authorization to install solar panels?
It depends on your municipality and building. On an existing roof it is often simplified, but a building permit may be required: always check with your municipal administration.
How does grid connection work?
For a system ≤ 30 kW, your electrician files a request with the grid operator via the myCreos platform. The operator has one month to respond; with no reply, approval is deemed granted. It then carries out the connection and fits the meter.
What timelines should I expect?
Installation takes 1-2 days; the whole process (authorization, grant, connection, commissioning) usually takes a few weeks to a few months depending on administrative delays.
Can I install it myself?
Electrical works and commissioning must be carried out by an installer established in Luxembourg holding the business permit for the electrician activity.
