Cost of a photovoltaic installation in Luxembourg

In Luxembourg, a residential solar installation most often costs between €5,000 and €18,000 turnkey depending on capacity, including the super-reduced 3 % VAT. The larger the installation, the lower the price per kWp: this is the degressive effect of fixed costs (installation, scaffolding, inverter, paperwork).

Here are indicative ranges by size, what makes the bill vary, and above all what you actually pay once the Klimabonus grant is deducted. The figures are orders of magnitude: only a quote for your roof is authoritative.

How much does an installation cost?

The price of a photovoltaic installation depends first on its capacity, expressed in kWp (kilowatt-peak). A small 2 kWp installation (~5 panels) covers part of a small household's needs for about €5,500 to €5,800 turnkey. A medium 6 kWp installation (~15 panels), the most common for a house, runs around €11,000 to €12,500.

Beyond that, a large 10 kWp installation (~25 panels) costs roughly €17,000 to €18,500. The total price climbs, but the price per kWp falls sharply: from about €2,830/kWp at 2 kWp to around €1,790/kWp at 10 kWp. Part of the cost (travel, scaffolding, inverter, grid connection) is fixed and spreads over a larger capacity.

All amounts below include the super-reduced 3 % VAT applicable in Luxembourg, and are before grants — the Klimabonus grant then sharply reduces what's left to pay (see below).

Indicative prices by capacity

2 kWp~5 panels~€5,660~€2,830
6 kWp~15 panels~€11,800~€1,970

What makes the price vary

Panel quality
Efficiency, product warranty (up to 25-30 years) and performance over time: a premium panel costs more upfront but produces longer.
Inverter type
String inverter (cheapest), micro-inverters or optimizers (useful with shading), battery-ready hybrid inverter: the gap can reach several hundred euros.
Storage battery
An option that strongly increases the quote (often +€4,000 to +€9,000 depending on capacity). Not essential, but it improves self-consumption.
Roof complexity
Pitch, height, covering type (tiles, slate, steel deck), number of faces and shading: the trickier the job, the more installation and scaffolding cost.
Brand & installer
Component reputation, installer warranties, after-sales quality: at equal capacity, two quotes can vary by 15 to 25 %.

And after the Klimabonus grant?

Luxembourg supports residential photovoltaics through the Klimabonus grant, which can reach up to €10,000 depending on the installed capacity and the scale in force. This aid is deducted directly from your investment: the displayed turnkey price is therefore not what you actually pay in the end.

Concrete example: a 6 kWp installation at ~€11,800 turnkey, once the grant is deducted, can come down to around €6,000 left to pay. The real net cost is thus much lower than the gross price, which significantly shortens the payback period.

The exact grant amount depends on your capacity, the commissioning date and the official conditions at the time: have it checked when you get the quote, as the scales change.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price per m² of a solar installation?
We rarely reason per m² but per kWp. As a guide, a panel takes ~2 m² and a kWp needs ~5 m² of roof. As an order of magnitude, count €350 to €550 per m² of installed panels depending on project size — but the quote is priced in kWp, not m².
How much does an installation with a battery cost?
A battery usually adds €4,000 to €9,000 to the quote depending on capacity (kWh). A 6 kWp installation with a battery can thus go from about €11,800 to €16,000-20,000 before grants. The battery isn't mandatory: it mainly makes sense if you consume little during the day.
Why do quotes vary so much?
Because they don't always compare the same thing: panel and inverter quality, battery or not, roof complexity, warranties and installer quality. Compare at equal capacity (kWp) and equivalent hardware, warranties included, not just the total price.
What VAT applies in Luxembourg?
Luxembourg applies a super-reduced 3 % VAT on residential photovoltaic installations, instead of the standard 17 % rate. It's an advantageous national specificity: all prices in this guide already include it.
